Four hours after leaving Sydney, Australia, Air Niugini's 707 arrives in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Malcolm Douglas and his companion Sean Dixon head straight for the harbour to board the Hiri Chief, a coastal trader loaded with supplies and equipment for the new mining ventures far to the west on the Irian Jaya border. Three days out from Port Moresby the trader is 200kms up the Fly River. Malcolm and Sean unpack the equipment shipped from Sydney some weeks earlier. Vast rivers, the teeming swamps, shy village people, and the eerie jungle have lured Malcolm back to Papua many times and for many years he has planned this adventure. He intends to explore along the Strickland River, one of the most isolated regions of Papua New Guinea.
