Australia is often pictured as a continent of deserts but along its northeastern coast where the Cape York peninsula juts to within 100 miles of New Guinea, there are tropical rainforests as lush and wet as any other. Because it was so long isolated from other continents, the Australian region has evolved plants and animals that are very different from those anywhere else in the world. Among the most unique and beautiful of its exotic wildlife are the many species of butterflies.
