The illicit trade in wild animals and plants is a worldwide multi-million dollar business. Appendix One to the Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species treaty lists those species considered to be on the edge of extinction which means virtually no trade is allowed. The Convention is young, only about a quarter of the world's animal trading nations have signed the treaty. John Burton, representative of the international independent organization which monitors this treaty, sees time running out.
