When fuel is pumped along a pipe both the fuel and the pipe become electrically charged by the action of the fuel on the pipe walls. This animated short instructional film is concerned only with the charges in the fuel. These charges are carried along with the fuel as it moves. If the fuel is splash-filled into a tank, these charges gather on the surface of the liquid. They then leak away along the surface of the liquid to the walls of the tank and then to earth, via the static wire. If the tank is not earthed, the charges cannot flow away and a high charge may build up on the surface of the fuel in the tank. If an object which could act as a conductor such as a thermometer or a fill tube or a dipstick is then placed close to the liquid's surface, the accumulated static charge will jump to the object in an attempt to find a path to earth.
