Products are designed and made to a particular specification. To do this, engineers need to know very precisely the mechanical properties of the materials used and that, in turn, requires laboratory testing in detail of the properties of that material. All mechanical testing must be comparative so to compare mechanical properties of different materials the tester must use specimens of a standard shape. In this programme, they test sheet materials and use a standard shape called a "dumb-bell"
